Top Tips for Celebrating New Year's Eve in the Netherlands

Celebrate New Year's Eve in Amsterdam & Apeldoorn

The Netherlands offers exciting ways to ring in the New Year, whether you're in Amsterdam or enjoying the festivities in Apeldoorn. From vibrant parties and stunning fireworks to unique Dutch traditions, there’s something for everyone.

New Year’s Eve in Apeldoorn

If you prefer the excitement of being outdoors, head to Museumplein for a stunning electric fireworks display. With live performances beginning at 22:30, this is a lively option for those who want to immerse themselves in the city's celebratory atmosphere. Don’t miss the Netherlands’ largest countdown clock as you welcome 2025 amidst the energy of the crowd.

Amsterdam’s nightlife scene truly comes alive on New Year’s Eve, offering a variety of options for those wanting to dance and party into the new year. One standout is the NYE Indoor Festival at Q-Factory, where 1,250 partygoers will groove to the beats of top Amsterdam DJs. VIP tickets include champagne and special treats for an extra touch of glamour.

At the Crowne Plaza Hotel, guests can dance to a mix of Urban, Afro-house, and World beats, with a delicious dinner buffet provided by De Japanner. For techno enthusiasts, the Gashouder’s Awakenings event is a must, with electrifying music and light displays in an iconic venue. Alternatively, head to Pllek for their River IJ Party, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city while renowned DJs lead the dance party.

Savour Dutch Traditions

A Dutch New Year’s celebration wouldn’t be complete without tasting oliebollen – deep-fried dough balls that are a beloved seasonal treat. Pair these indulgent snacks with a glass of champagne for a quintessential Dutch experience.

Start the New Year with a Splash

For those looking for a bold and bracing start to 2025, the traditional New Year’s Swim at Zandvoort aan Zee is a must. Brave the chilly North Sea waters alongside thousands of participants, or cheer them on from the shore while warming up with a bowl of hearty pea soup.

New Year’s Eve in Apeldoorn

If you are celebrating closer to Wittenborg’s main campus in Apeldoorn, there are plenty of exciting events to enjoy. One of the highlights is the GIGANT New Year’s Party, where you can dance to hits from the 80s, 90s, and 00s. With tickets often selling out quickly, it’s best to book in advance.

Another great option is Apeldoorn Telt Af, a free event at Zwitsalterrein. Starting at 20:00, this celebration features live performances, a spectacular fireworks show, and music from popular DJs like Chiel and Party Harry. The event is perfect for all ages, so bring the whole family along.

For a family-friendly celebration, check out the Mini Countdown at Zuiderpark. This event runs from 19:00 to 21:00 and features a DJ and fireworks display, offering an early start to the festivities. If you prefer outdoor activities, the New Year’s Eve Walk in De Hoge Veluwe lets you explore the beautiful winter landscapes of the national park with guided tours to the unique sounds of midwinter horn instruments. The walk runs from 09:30 to 12:00.

Sports enthusiasts can join the OpenAir Apeldoorn activities, including bootcamps and adult HIIT workouts. There will also be oliebollen and a bouncy castle, with activities starting at 09:30.

What You Need to Know About Buying Fireworks

Fireworks are a key part of New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Netherlands, and there are some important things to keep in mind. Sales days are limited, with fireworks available for purchase on Saturday, 28 December, Monday, 30 December, and Tuesday, 31 December. Sales are prohibited on Sunday, 29 December.

When buying fireworks, make sure to purchase only from licensed stores. Each municipality provides a list of approved outlets. Fireworks bought abroad must comply with Dutch safety regulations and can only be transported during the permitted sales days (with a maximum of 25 kg per car).

Online purchases of fireworks are permitted, but they must be collected from a legal point of sale on the designated days, as home delivery is prohibited by law. There are also age restrictions: F1 fireworks (like sparklers) require a minimum age of 12, while F2 fireworks (such as volcanoes) require a minimum age of 16. Always check the packaging for specific age requirements.

Safety is a top priority, and sellers are required to provide safety goggles and fuses free of charge. Some high-risk fireworks are banned to reduce injuries and nuisances during the celebrations.

Important Travel Information

Although 31 December is not an official holiday in the Netherlands, 1 January is. This means that there will be no mail delivery on New Year’s Day, and public transport will operate on a limited schedule. From 6:00 on New Year’s Eve until the following day, some transport options may be restricted or unavailable. If you plan to travel by bus or train, be sure to check the timetable in advance to avoid being stranded in the cold on a Dutch winter night.

Plan Ahead

Amsterdam’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are incredibly popular, so it’s essential to plan ahead and make reservations for most events.
